ANNUAL DINNER 2014
With only a couple of competitions over Belleisle remaining, thoughts are now turning to the Annual Dinner and Prize Giving. Given the very positive feedback from those who attended last year, we’ll be returning to the Fairfield House Hotel again. Ticket prices have been frozen at 2013 prices (£25) and will go on sale soon. Our guest speaker for the event is Mr Duncan Cameron. It would be great to see a large turnout, especially of those who won competitions and have silverware to collect…. More on the dinner in the coming weeks….
Belleisle Junior continues to progress…
Ruben Lindsay from Ayr Belleisle and Troon Welbeck, completed a fine season in the Stephen Gallacher Foundation U10 stroke play events by winning the 2014 Order of Merit Championship. This was decided on a points system based on scratch scores over 18 hole and some 9 hole events organised by Stephen’s Foundation in the Lothians area, with double points on offer in the Grand Finals played at Kingsfield on Saturday 7th September. While Ruben narrowly missed out on a 3 way play-off by 1 stroke to decide the final event, his 9 gold medals in 9 previous events played over the 2014 season was enough to secure the Title. Ruben also won a silver medal in the short course match play fun event on the day. During the SGF season, Ruben recorded the winning scratch score in the entire U14 field on two occasions and the 2014 U10 Title earned him an invite to the ‘Race to Dunbar’ U18 & U15 season finale in October. Ruben’s success follows a mixed season, with two tops tens in the other major events of the year with 9th place in the USKG European Championships in May at Craigielaw and 7th place in the 2014 Wee Wonders British Championships in August at St Andrews. He had a great experience during the 2014 World Championships in July at Pinehurst, but was disappointed to finish 53rd in a field of 155 qualifiers. In addition to the above achievements, Ruben won his age category in the Paul Lawrie Foundation 2014 Flag Event Grand Final. In the U10 boys flag event Ruben reached the 11th hole with his allocated 36 shots over the tree-lined ‘wee course’ at Deeside Golf Club in Aberdeen. Paul Lawrie attended the Final event of the season to award all the prize winners with medals and other goodies and give some inspirational words to the boys and girls of his Foundation. Ruben’s sister Ella (aged 6) also won a silver medal. Ruben received special mention for his outstanding scores in qualifiers, scoring an all-time Foundation record by holing out at the 12th hole in 36 shots at the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre in July. We wish Ruben, and all of our Juniors, continued success next season…

Hollingworth triumphs in Open, shooting his age!! Congratulations to Doug Hollingworth on his victory in the Belleisle Open, which was played in wet conditions yesterday (Sunday 27th). Steady play and a calm head reaped rewards for veteran Doug, whose nett 67 was good enough for a two stroke victory over the field, which was some 150 strong in spite of the poor weather. Best scratch was our own Keith Hamilton, who scored an impressive 68. Many thanks to all who braved the testing conditions to play, to our hole sponsors and to all committee members who assisted on the day. Doug returned to a sunny Belleisle earlier today to receive his trophy from Forbes Watson of our title sponsor, DW Shaw, whose ongoing support of the Open is very much appreciated. A stunning first round of 66 put John in a strong position. His second round, a solid 70 scored in worsening weather conditions, was good enough to see off his closest challengers from round one. Robert Jenkins (Crow Wood GC) finished second on 139 with our own Keith Hamilton (140) finishing third. Colin McCrossan, representing title sponsor Corum Property, presented John with the trophy. Also pictured are Ayr Belleisle Golf Club Captain, Alistair Byers and Vice Captain, Alan Park. Full results can be found on the Belleisle Cup/Open section of the website.

Belleisle Boys lose opening Ayrshire Junior Golf League match…. Playing Irvine Golf Club on Tuesday evening, the Ayr Belleisle boys went down 4-2 at home. The top match went to the 18th, with Irvine’s Scotland international Stuart Easton narrowly edging out Jordan Fraser. Fine wins for Matthew Thompson and Andrew Gordon were in vain as Jordan Sweeney, Robert Meddings and Ross Meikle, who were all giving away several strokes to their opponents, were defeated. Irvine will, undoubtedly, be a force in the section so all is certainly not lost. The boys play another home match, this time against Caprington, on the evening of May 20th. If any member would like to come out and support the boys, your presence would be most appreciated…

Belleisle Under 16s miss out in final… Commiserations to the U16 team of Jordan Sweeney, Andrew Gordon, Robert Meddings and Ross Meikle, who lost out 3-1 in the final to Loudon G.C yesterday (Sunday). It was a sore one to take, and the boys were very disappointed at losing over their home course in the final, but they should be very proud of their season in various competitions. They have represented the Club with great distinction and will be back, hungry for success, next season. Well done boys!
